Cocktail Hour: Limoncello Mojito

June 18, 2010

We recently devoured a bottle of Villa Massa Limoncello over the summer.  This particular limoncello is made from an Italian family recipe dating back to 1890. The basic ingredients are lemon rinds, vodka, sugar and water and once brought together the blend needs to steep for around 80 days.   Needless to say it’s quite a strong drink and traditionally served well chilled or on ice. It’s perfect as a palate cleanser or after dinner drink.  On it’s own, limoncello is a sensational drink and perfect for sipping over summer but you can also create some magnificient cocktails!  The Villa Massa webite has a lot of cocktail recipes however I’ve listed one of my favourites below, the Limoncello Mojito!   You can purchase Villa Massa Limoncello at selected Dan Murphy’s stores or online from Boccaccio.

Limoncello Mojito

What you’ll need

  • 1 handful fresh mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chilled Villa Massa limoncello
  • 2 tablespoon caster sugar
  • 1/3 cup chilled soda water
  • Mint leaves, garnish
  • Lemon wedges, garnish

How to mix this cocktail

In a cocktail shaker, put a small handful mint leaves, add fresh lemon juice and caster sugar. Use a muddle to mash well.  Add a large handful or scoop of ice and shake vigorously. Strain and then divide into two highball glasses.  Add 1/4 cup Villa Massa limoncello to each glass and top each glass with soda water.  Stir and garnish with mint and lemon wedges.

Tip: rub some mint inside the highball glass before pouring the liquid in.
