Well, twenty establishments are competing in the Melbourne Macaron Competition 2010 to determine who has the best macaron.  There are three categories;  best signature macaron,  best chocolate macaron and  best designer macaron.  If you are in Melbourne you can view the competing macarons on display at the NGV Tea Rooms on Level 1 on Wednesday 27 October.  Click here to see the 20 competing establishments.  Follow the competition on Twitter @melbmacaron

What are Macarons?

Dating back to the 18th century, the macaron is a traditional French pastry, made of egg whites, almond powder, icing sugar and sugar.  The sweet pastry comes out of the oven as round meringue-like domes with a flat base.   They are then finished off as a sandwich with a ganache or cream filling.

If you’re keen to make some macarons, then take a quick look at one of my favourite bloggers, Helene at Tartlette, for a great article of the baking macarons.

Till we meet again…
