Cocktail Hour: Brasilian Sunrise

May 6, 2011

Over the Easter break my family had a Cocktail Classic competition and this scrumptious cocktail, the Brasilian Sunrise was my entry.  Based on a recipe that I found via Cocktail Times, it’s a wonderful twist on the long drink, Tequila Sunrise (tequila, orange juice & grenadine).  My family and I really enjoyed it and I hope you do too.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 45mls cachaça*
  • 60mls freshly extracted pineapple juice
  • 15mls oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 30mls sugar syrup
  • 10mls  grenadine

Garnish: lemon wheel (you can also use pineapple wedge and leaf)

HOW TO MIX THIS DRINK

Combine cachaça, pineapple juice, lemon juice and sugar syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into frozen margarita glass (or a martini glass).  Gently top with grenadine and finish off with a lemon wheel garnish.

*Note: Cachaça (pronounced kah-SHAH-sah) is a distilled spirit from Brasil that is often associated with rum. The difference is that cachaça is made from sugar cane juice where rum uses molasses.   A popular cocktail made with cachaça is the Caipirinha (one of my favourites).  Cachaça is available at most good liquor stores in Australia.

Salud!
